Using Google Wave for a Manhunt
The Seattle Times is trying a to use Google Wave for a pretty serious task — catching a killer. They’ve created a public wave with information about the chase for the man suspected of killing four Seattle police officers a few days ago. There are over 100 people in the Wave that are adding video footage, suspect descriptions, police scanner audio, automobile details, etc. It’s neat to watch. TechCrunch has a nice review of how well (or not) it is working. Some people love to see the flow of information, while others think it’s simply too chaotic. Spam will also be an issue for things like this, though this wave seems to be mostly on-task as of now. This certainly adds a new item to the great ways to use Google Wave , and I expect we’ll see many other creative uses for it in the coming months. Google Wave now open for federation
As you may know, Google’s goal with Wave is to eventually replace e-mail. While that seems unlikely to happen, federation is certainly a key to even discuss it. As TheNextWeb says : Google Wave has been designed from the ground up to allow federated distribution models, meaning you can build and host your own Wave servers, e.g. for your corporate users, and make them talk to other Wave servers. It’s very much like the distributed nature of SMTP based email transmission, but technically way more complex due to the real-time nature of the service. While federation won’t affect most users for now, it could be essential in the future. For example, your business could host it’s own Wave server. Google doesn’t think it will ultimately succeed if they control every bit of it, so opening up the federation protocol could help drive its long-term growth. New Google Chorme Plug-in is made for Google Wave
When I first heard about the new Google Chrome plugin for Internet Explorer this morning, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I’m a huge Chrome fan, but didn’t see why it was such a huge deal that you could run Chrome through IE. Now I get it. One week from tomorrow, Google Wave will be opening up to 100,000 users. According to the Chrome team, Internet Explorer simply can’t handle technologies associated with HTML5 or handle JavaScript efficiently enough. Before IE users will be allowed to use Wave, they’ll be forced to install the plug-in (or use an alternate browser). While most of us can (and do) use browsers other than Internet Explorer, many people in corporate environments don’t have the ability to do that. This plug-in takes care of that for them, and should give them a great way to use Google Wave. If you’d like to see developer’s information about the Chrome Frame, you can get it here .
